Best rebounder in Memphis Grizzlies history: Zach Randolph
During their most recent and greatest run of success, which saw them reach the Western Conference Finals in 2013, the Memphis Grizzlies played a lethargic “Grit and Grind” that embodied the blue-collar city they played in. No player better exemplified that era than Zach Randolph.
Randolph was something of a journeyman prior to landing in Memphis, playing with three teams in eight years before joining the Grizzlies via a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers (Los Angeles received Quentin Richardson in return).
“Z-Bo” wasted no time becoming a fan favorite, as his hard-nosed style helped establish the Grizzlies smash mouth identity. While he was far from the most athletic guy, Randolph made his money using a smooth post game and determination on the glass. Though only 6-foot-9, Randolph often used his wide, bulky, 260-pound frame to box opponents out and nab rebounds.
In eight seasons with Memphis, Randolph managed to scratch and claw his way to the top of the franchise’s all-time leaderboard for offensive rebounds, total rebounds and rebounds per game, while ranking second on the team all-time in defensive boards.
When he got to Memphis, Randolph was a player that no one wanted. Starting with his days with the Portland Trail Blazers, he was looked at as a someone who was more trouble than what he was worth.
It took a little while, but for those eight seasons with the Grizzlies, Randolph found a home. He along with Marc Gasol and Mike Conley gave Memphis a team that best reflected the city, which is why he is so beloved there.
