1. Kevin Durant, SF, Golden State Warriors (player option)

I truly believe this is the free agent Lakers fans are praying the team gets in 2019. Then again, it makes perfect sense considering Kevin Durant is arguably the best player in the NBA right now.

In fact, there’s already been plenty of rumors and speculation on the matter.

We’ve heard of numerous connections between James and Durant in recent months, from a casual rooftop dinner to plots being hatched behind closed doors. While it’s obviously difficult to tell reality from rumor fodder, there appears to be smoke. And usually where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

For now, though, let’s just consider him a person of interest for the Lakers. First, he would need to actually make himself available instead of simply re-signing with the Golden State Warriors. There still seems to be a good chance that happens, so I wouldn’t start ordering your purple and gold Durant jersey just yet.

Realistically though, the Lakers have a decent shot at landing him. Teaming him with James would make for a dangerous duo, and the two are clearly comfortable together. With the Warriors facing some serious luxury tax issues in the coming years, Durant may decide to simply take his talents elsewhere before the difficult financial decisions come for Golden State.

For now, consider Durant the Lakers’ top free agent target. Don’t get your hopes too high, though.
