Washington Wizards: 3 takeaways from the first 10 games
3. Scott Brooks‘ job is safe for now
Last week I wrote a piece about Scott Brooks’ time running out, though the team came out and said the latter. For now, it looks like Brooks is safe, but with a full rotation at his disposal, he needs to make some adjustments.
The last time the Wizards got off to a 2-8 start was during the 2016-17 season, Brooks’ first year as head coach. They would go on to finish that season 49-33, going 29-12 through the months of December, January and February. Three seasons in, Brooks had to adjust to a new rotation and with Dwight Howard missing for the first seven games of this season, depth in the frontcourt was thin.
Despite losing five games in a row, their recent victories have shown them moving to a different beat at full strength. Washington allowed less than 100 points for the first time all season against the New York Knicks in its 108-95 victory last Sunday night. The team went back to its old ways on the road against Dallas, however. On the road, Washington is 1-5 this year.
The Wizards aren’t the only team facing obstacles on the road, but Brooks still needs to put them in the best position to win. He’s go role players in Tomas Satoransky, Jason Smith and Thomas Bryant. While they may not be full of talent, winning and playing as a good teammate could be their main focus, making them an ultimate priority in the lineup.
