Dallas Mavericks: What should they do with Harrison Barnes?
By Aaron Burg
Use him as a role player
While Barnes has a lot of potential, he is getting closer to becoming a role player if the Mavericks turn things around and continue to add young stars. As we’ve seen, Barnes is rather limited in his skill-set, spelling designation to role player status if he doesn’t continue to improve past this season.
With a championship to his name and a mature demeanor, Barnes is the perfect candidate for Dallas to keep long-term to mold rookies and keep things steady moving into the future.
The Mavs could eventually decide to find a player who is more well-rounded to replace him down the line, but for now, he can provide valuable offense and mentorship. He still has a few years to go before he should find himself in this role, so it might be a smart move for Dallas to set the stage for him in that role and not try to build around him so much moving forward.
While Harrison Barnes has plenty of skill, he also carries plenty of questions. What will he grow to become this season and beyond? How should the Mavericks treat him moving forward? Or is it time to move on all together?
He is a player who has proven a lot, but still has a lot to prove at the same time. There are several directions the Mavericks can go with Barnes, but they must tread lightly and make sure they weigh all options and their consequences.
It could make all the difference in their quest to taking the next step, just like he’s been looking to do for years now.
