2. 2018-19 City Edition jersey

  • Playoff appearances: TBD
  • Notable players: Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Derrick Rose

After last year’s city edition fell flat, this year’s is one of the hottest jersey designs I’ve ever seen. Last year’s jersey gambled on grey and ended up being boring and monochromatic; this year the team gambled on purple, paying homage to Minnesota native Prince, and they hit it out of the park.

Even the jersey’s reveal was cool:

The No. 2 spot might seem like an overreaction, but these jerseys are beautiful, cool and distinctly Minnesotan. After the Utah Jazz saw their incredible 2017-18 city edition rolled over into this season (Nike has noted that City Editions will change annually), the precedent is there for this uniform to continue past this season, especially if it sells well — which, if fan reaction is any indication, it will.

While the team isn’t using this stunning court design when they wear these jerseys, the overall artwork and idea behind the uniform and the court is some of the most well-focused design in recent NBA history.

The Timberwolves have largely dropped green from their color scheme, blue is overdone across sports as a whole and grey is often bland (as we saw with last year’s city edition); why not add purple as an alternative when it looks this good?

Whether the Timberwolves make the playoffs this year remains to be seen, and Jimmy Butler might never don one of these, but with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins around to move merchandise, along with fan favorites Tyus Jones and Josh Okogie, the number of relevant players to wear this uniform could be long by the time all is said and done.
