Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 reasons it was smart to fire Tyronn Lue
By Ryan Piers
1. Lue never fit with the front office
Maybe he wasn’t the best X’s and O’s guy. Maybe his successor was the better fit for the job. Most practically, Lue was always at odds with the front office.
Now, it appears that was the primary reason he was fired. The Athletic‘s Joe Vardon is reporting that Altman wanted Lue to play the youngsters more, specifically hoping Collin Sexton would start. Lue preferred to stay with George Hill.
After an 0-2 start, Lue succumbed to the front office’s wishes. He granted Sexton and the younger talent more minutes. It still didn’t work.
The riff with the front office is deeper than tactical preferences. Lue was close to former Cavaliers general manager David Griffin. They even share the same agent. Terry Pluto with The Plain Dealer says it bothered Lue when Griffin was fired in 2017.
Lue now joins a growing list of successful coaches to be fired in Cleveland.
Front offices sometimes fail to see eye-to-eye with head coaches, and that’s okay when you’re winning.
In this case, Lue was given the quick hook. It’s probably for the better, for both the Cavs and Lue.
