Through 16 games, Stephen Curry — coming off his first MVP and first title — was averaging 32.1 points on 51.2/43.1/93.8 splits to go with 5.9 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals. Great, sure, but he was still under 5.0 3s per game. Something had to change.

In three quarters against the Phoenix Suns, it did. Curry cracked 40 points for the fifth time in the young season, and buried nine triples.

Of all the record-chasing fourth quarters Curry has been denied by the cruel Steve Kerr, this was the least likely to yield him 12 3s. He went 7-for-9 from deep in the first half, but just 2-for-7 in the third.

This was still a Curry relatively unfamiliar with historical flirtation, as he had made 9 3s just four times in his first six seasons — and never had reached seven by halftime. He was overeager, and his shot quality had reduced as a result.

He wasn’t going to hit 12, with or without fourth quarter minutes.
