The 2018-19 NBA season is in full swing and after two weeks of games, we take a look at the top five contenders for the Rookie of the Year award so far.

Another season, another rookie class. The 2017-18 season served up a stellar class of rookies and this year’s group looks poised to do the same. First overall pick Deandre Ayton is already picking up where he left off in college with the Phoenix Suns. He’s already racked up three double-doubles in four games to lead all rookies.

Atlanta Hawks rookie guard Trae Young has his arsenal on full display too. He’s already put up a career-high 35 points. His rookie counterpart, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, is right on his heels. When the two teams faced off on Wednesday night, Young’s team got the better of the matchup in a 26-point comeback victory.

As far as disappointments go, sixth overall pick and Orlando Magic big man Mohamed Bamba has struggled out of the gates through his first five games. He’s putting up just 4.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and has gone scoreless in two appearances as well.

The 2018 rookie class isn’t as deep nor are the expectations as high for them as was the case last season. That’s not to say there isn’t any talent, but the likelihood is certainly there to find a diamond in the rough.

Exhibit A: Allonzo Trier. Though he went undrafted this past summer, he’s found his way on the New York Knicks‘ roster, averaging 9.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 37.5 percent from 3-point range. The rookies are still getting acclimated and so far it’s shaping up to be a competitive Rookie of the Year race. Here’s are the top five rookies in this week’s power rankings.
