Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 takeaways from first 3 games

2. Collin Sexton struggles
Top draft picks at same positions are often compared to each other throughout their careers. Most famously, football fans chuckle at contrasts between Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. The two quarterbacks were taken first and second overall in the 1998 NFL Draft. One turned into a Hall-of Famer. One is in prison for stealing prescription drugs.
Sunday evening was the first of what will likely be many matchups between the clear top-two point guards in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Cavs’ Collin Sexton and the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young. Round one clearly went to Young, as he dropped 35 points and six 3-pointers with 11 dimes. Sexton scored four points on 2-of-11 shooting.
Sexton is experiencing early growing pains, averaging just 9.0 points, 1.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. There have been moments where he’s looked really bad. Still, his hustle shines through.
He’s also having fun, which is a positive for any rookie.

Sexton’s game doesn’t appear to be quite NBA-ready. He must polish his jump shot and his high motor could use a break from time to time. His first three performances raised concerned eyebrows. Patience may be the key with Sexton. Unfortunately, that probably doesn’t bode well for the Cavs’ fortunes this season.
