New York Knicks: 3 takeaways from 2018-19 season opener
2. A tale of two rookies
The rookie duo of Kevin Knox and Allonzo Trier had vastly different routes to the NBA.
Knox, taken with the eighth overall pick in the draft, was a guy many expected to crack the starting lineup in his first NBA game. Trier, having gone undrafted out of Arizona, had to grind his way onto the roster in the form of a two-way contract.
On opening night though, it was hard to tell who was who, as Trier was phenomenal in 26 minutes of play, pouring in 15 points on 5-of-9 percent shooting, including a nasty dunk that brought the Garden to its feet.
Knox, on the other hand, had a debut to forget, shooting a ghastly 4-of-16 on his way to 10 points in 23 minutes of play. He simply couldn’t find the rhythm from anywhere, missing some easy shots around the rim and missing four of his five 3-point attempts.
Allonzo’s performance has to have Knicks fans excited about the possible diamond in the rough the front office may have found, while Knox just needs to shake it off and get ready for the next game.
These two rookies still have plenty to prove over the course of what will be a long and grueling first year in the league. As many Knicks fans would agree, this win against Atlanta was hopefully a microcosm for Trier and a blip on the radar for Knox.
