2018-19 NBA season: Record predictions for every team
Charlotte Hornets
Kemba Walker deserves better. The Charlotte Hornets are cash-strapped and marred in mediocrity, boasting very little when it comes to Walker’s supporting cast. Nicolas Batum and Marvin Williams are on the decline and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist hasn’t figured things out on offense. There just isn’t much there.
Perhaps James Borrego is the answer. Unlike Steve Clifford, he seems willing to utilize young pieces like Malik Monk and Miles Bridges, both of whom can energize the second unit. Dwight Howard and his baggage are also gone, which could have benefits.
With that said, the Hornets top the list of teams who need to blow it up. Trading Walker and starting from the bottom is their best option, even if the 28-year-old appears content. If things go south early, expect him to hit the trade market.
Until then, Walker will remain their leading scorer and emotional leader. Bridges has put together a standout preseason — placing him firmly in the All-Rookie discussion — but his impact as a rookie will be limited. Monk failed to make an impression last season.
If Cody Zeller and Willy Hernangomez are a subtle upgrade over Howard, the Hornets might exceed some expectations. Yet, even then, the odds of Walker remaining with the team long term seem thin. Their current roster isn’t up to par with most playoff teams.
Expect another finish in the 9-10 range for a Charlotte team that lacks direction. Mitch Kupchak was hired to clean things up and get the franchise back on its feet. Right now, there’s no indication that any progress has been made.
Final prediction: 36-46, Miss NBA Playoffs
