Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets are an intriguing team on the precipice of a breakthrough campaign. That might not happen this season, but their young talent and attractive market will eventually lead to success. The front office has done a fantastic job salvaging a poor situation.

Despite missing out on first-round picks for several years, the Nets have accumulated a nice batch of prospects. D’Angelo Russell is still just 22 years old. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is a versatile two-way option with a budding offensive game. Jarrett Allen has special defensive potential.

While Russell’s growth has been marginal in recent season’s, his craft as a playmaker and scorer still inspire optimism. We’ve seen him single-handedly carry the Nets to wins, flashing the star potential that still resides within the former No. 2 pick.

Hollis-Jefferson, in some circles, is viewed as Brooklyn’s best player. His perimeter shot is a work in progress, but he’s becoming a versatile small-ball four with an elite defensive ceiling. Allen is the anchor in the post, using his long arms and mobility to deter shots around the rim.

Kenny Atkinson is one of the NBA’s brightest young coaches, installing a modern system with great success in recent seasons. The Nets prioritize defense and 3-point shooting, all while surrounding their core with a deep batch of young role players.

As long as the main pieces take another leap, the Nets will improve on their 2017-18 win total. They’re still a year or two away from competing in the playoff picture — it’s largely dependent on how 2019 free agency goes — but the Nets should continue to show positive flashes.

Final prediction: 30-52, Miss NBA Playoffs
