2. Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray led the NBA’s GM survey for most likely to break out in 2018-19. Murray garnered 20 percent of votes, doubling up Brandon Ingram and Jayson Tatum‘s second-place tie (10 percent each). Several offseason articles made similar predictions, including this article by Matthew Huff of NuggLove and Hoops Habit‘s own piece predicting breakout candidates.

Murray is an interesting story for the Nuggets. Often compared to Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard, he took a leap in 2017-18. Starting full-time his sophomore season, Murray averaged 16.7 points per game — a healthy increase from 9.9 points per game as a rookie.

It’s time for Murray to build upon last season. He’s already proven himself a legitimate NBA starter, but he hasn’t even approached his ceiling yet.

Murray will play a huge role offensively this season. He has the green light to shoot, and should achieve notable scoring. He may even ultimately take over as fourth-quarter closer. He fits the bill better than last year’s approach of favoring the game’s hottest hand.

Nuggets fans will observe Jamal Murray’s play early and often. He represents a key strand of excitement. If all goes well, he could quickly become the squad’s undisputed second option. Will the GM survey prove correct?
