3. Will Barton

Will Barton spent the past 12 months largely in his groove. He transformed from a decent bench scorer to almost stealing the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award. As a result, “Thrill” signed a four-year, $53 million extension in July. Shortly afterward, Wilson Chandler was dealt, opening the starting spot for Barton.

All systems are a go for Barton. He is exactly where he wants to be — starting for Denver, on a rich new deal. Now it’s time to perform.

His stats as a starter are shocking. In 40 starts, he averaged 17.7 points per game, which would have landed him second-highest on the squad. He displayed well-rounded versatility, posting 5.6 boards and 4.4 assists. Barton shot well in starts, splashing 47.6 percent from the field and 40.4 percent of his 3-pointers.

This multi-faceted success encouraged Denver’s commitment to Barton. If the trend continues, it has a small forward who can score, rebound, pass and spread the floor.

Nuggets fans are interested in Thrill’s first month. Last year’s number measured up, but what’s the final product? Can Barton continue his success as a full-time starter? How will he mesh with a healthy starting unit? These questions may be answered as early as October.
