Cleveland Cavaliers: The 3 best possible starting lineups
By Ryan Piers
1. Sexton, Hood, Korver, Love and Thompson
There are no numbers to back this one up. This just feels like the most dominant lineup Cleveland can put forth.
Its focal point is Love, freed up to focus on offense while Thompson defends the more formidable post opponent. With Thompson seeing more time (he played a career low 20.2 minutes per game last season) it eases the burden on Love with less responsibility to defend the post.
The rookie Collin Sexton fits perfectly as the lineup’s leader, the only gritty penetrator with reliable rim finishing skills in the bunch. Sexton’s quickness also jells seamlessly with Love’s pick-and-roll abilities. The two could be quite the dynamic duo in that regards.
Then there is Hood. He’s the lengthy forward who seems to be always be one season away from reaching his full potential. Hood will kind of have free range to do his own thing with this lineup, whether it’s creating his own shot off the dribble or waiting for kick-outs on the wing. He is the third option behind Love and Sexton.
Finally, we have Korver. This lineup lacks a formidable outside threat, especially if Hood shoots 35.2 percent from the 3-point line like he did in a Cavs uniform last season. He could also be the yin to Sexton’s yang. Korver is a veteran, heavy-footed, technically sound wing with one of the sweetest strokes in NBA history. Sexton is a teenager, undeniably athletic, yet very green. He was also often knocked for his shooting in college.
This bunch just feels like it should blend well. It features a pair of opposites in the post and backcourt, mixed with the guy everyone wants to see do well in Hood. Maybe it’s the lineup that leads Lue’s new-look team.
