1. Potential star addition and its implications for the future

Chances are, if you’re a fan of the NBA, you’ve heard about the recent Jimmy Butler trade request. As already discussed previously, Butler’s preferred destination is the Clippers and he could end up in L.A as soon as this season. Obviously, they’d have to trade for him, and Hoops Habit’s own Gerald Bourguet laid out the potential moves that could be in place.

Although it’s more likely the Clippers will wait until the offseason to acquire Butler, they still could realistically offer a straight up trade involving Tobias Harris and Lou Williams. This acquisition is also expected to lead to a potential Kawhi Leonard signing in 2019, as the Clippers will have room for two max contracts.

If L.A. does trade for Butler and has him during the 2018-19 season, Clippers fans will have an All-Star on a team with some promising young guards and depth if everyone can stay healthy. Tobias Harris and Lou Williams proved to be effective, but a Jimmy Butler trade would signify the start of bigger and better things to come.

The best part is, it’s definitely feasible and maybe even likely. While some may not like the idea of Butler leading the team, it’s the moves that would happen in reaction to this move later down the line that could be most beneficial for the team. In other words, a Butler signing could lead to another star signing and some fairly big-name free agents down the road. The 2018-19 season could be the very first glimpse of that.
