Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 lineups they need to test out in 2018-19
By Tony Pesta
2. The veterans
The lineup: George Hill (PG), J.R. Smith (SG), Kyle Korver (SF), Kevin Love (PF), Channing Frye (C)
This is the type of lineup that would only come out on special occasions. You never know when the team might need a quick dose of veteran leadership. Sometimes, the older guys need to show the younger prospects how it’s done.
With these players, there are a combined 62 seasons of experience. Each of them has played 10-plus NBA seasons and have at least one trip to the NBA Finals under each of their belts. This type of experience is valuable to any team.
It’s not like they’re all that old either. Kevin Love is still in his prime. George Hill and J.R. Smith are still capable of being productive. Granted, they are towards the back end of their career. Even Kyle Korver and Channing Frye can have big games despite being 37 and 35 years old, respectively.
Putting this lineup on the floor would benefit the team in one way. The number of silly mistakes would absolutely be minimized. When rebuilding a team, it’s normal for the younger players to make rookie mistakes. A lineup full of vets would avoid these errors.
This squad could be perfect for closing out games early in the season. Let the older players display how to put a team away and then gradually introduce the younger players to this type of pressure. Taking baby steps will be a big theme for the developing prospects and this lineup is a great way of easing them into the NBA.
