The Minnesota Timberwolves need someone to step up during the 2018-19 season and make an impact. Here are three candidates for a breakout season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been the headline of the basketball world lately. This is mainly because their star player, Jimmy Butler, recently requested a trade in hopes of leaving the Twin Cities behind.

Last season, the Wolves snuck into the playoffs by winning the final game of the regular season at home against the Denver Nuggets. It’s pretty clear that in the incredibly strong Western Conference, they’ll need more than they had last year to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Losing Jimmy Butler wouldn’t be a good way to start that journey.

If a Butler trade ends up happening, the Wolves will need a player, or two (or six) who can step up and fill that void. Is that player already on the roster? Will that player come over in a trade? These are fun questions to ask, but the answers will have to wait.

For now, it’s just fun to speculate.

The Wolves have a lot of young pieces that could step up and have a breakout season in 2018-19, but which three players are the most likely? Let’s go through the most likely candidates.
