10 young NBA players in need of a breakout season in 2018-19
10. Norman Powell, Toronto Raptors
Remember Norman Powell? The guy who was a revelation for the Toronto Raptors during the 2017 NBA Playoffs and suddenly became untouchable in all hypothetical trade talks? The script has completely flipped only a year later, and he now finds himself in need of a breakout season.
Powell’s numbers dropped from 8.4 points in 18.0 minutes per game in 2016-17 to a measly 5.5 points in 15.2 minutes per game last year. His 44.9 percent shooting dipped to 40.1 percent, and his 3-point percentage plummeted to a career-low 28.4 percent. For a guy who shot 40.4 percent from deep as a rookie, a second straight year of decline in 3-point efficiency is concerning.
OG Anunoby established himself as the new wing of the future last year, and with Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green joining a wing rotation that already includes C.J. Miles, minutes will be scarce. The only thing keeping him from being higher up this list is the security of the four-year, $42 million extension that starts this year (and looks pretty stupid right now, if we’re being honest).
