2. Adapting to a new system

Sometimes a coaching change is something simple like an assistant coach stepping up. For the Pistons, they are completely changing their system with the addition of Casey. Former head coach Stan Van Gundy’s system is gone, and the team has begun putting even more of a focus on 3-point shooting. They are trying to get bigger at the guard and wing spots, while they get smaller up front.

Another issue is that, while they are trying to change the roster to adapt to Casey’s system, it isn’t close to there yet. Last season, the Toronto Raptors had finally gotten the roster as close as possible to perfect for the system. They had a multitude of switchable wings to go along with one of the best pairs of guards in the NBA. The Pistons have some of those pieces, but they have a ways to go until they’re where they need to be.

No one on the roster other than Jose Calderon has played under Casey, and he figures to not play much if at all this season. There will be growing pains as the team figures out how to put it all together. It may take them too long to figure it all out though. A game here or there can make all the difference at the end of the season when pushing for the playoffs, and they can be one of those teams that just misses the cut due to some early season struggles.
