Detroit Pistons: 5 reasons to be excited for 2018-19 NBA season
3. New faces for a new future
The Pistons are focusing on getting younger and adapting to the modern NBA. Most of their offseason additions are athletic 3-point shooters with the ability to guard multiple positions. They needed more positional versatility, and they have been accomplishing those goals thus far. Outside of Zaza Pachulia and Jose Calderon, who are mostly veteran depth pieces, everyone can play more than one position.
Their two draft picks, Bruce Brown Jr. and Khyri Thomas, are hyper-athletic guards that can play both guard spots. Brown is possibly the point guard of the future, and he has a better play style to fit the surrounding pieces. Thomas has the ability to be another 3-and-D wing alongside Stanley Johnson and Luke Kennard. He shot 42 percent from 3-point range in college, which would greatly benefit the team if it translates to the next level.
One sneaky addition to watch this season is Glenn Robinson III. Robinson spent the last three seasons with the Indiana Pacers, and he’s hoping a change of scenery will add up to a rebound season. He lost the majority of last year due to an injury, and his numbers increased in a limited run at the end of last year. He needs to show he can maintain those numbers over a full season, as he pushes Johnson for minutes at the small forward spot.
