1. Wesley Matthews

The relationship between Wesley Matthews and the Mavericks was always an awkward one.

Despite suffering an Achilles tear during the 2014-15 season, Dallas still decided to throw $70 million over four years at Matthews in free agency. Unfortunately, after Jordan backed out of his verbal agreement that same summer, the Mavericks’ direction changed drastically.

Since that deal, Matthews has played well offensively, shooting 36.7 percent from deep, but he doesn’t have that same prowess on the defensive end that made him one of the best 3-and-D players earlier in his career.

Matthews finds himself in a similar spot to DeAndre Jordan in that teams could certainly use his services, if only for an upcoming playoff run with his expiring contract representing a valuable asset to others looking to clear their books.

Dallas could look to re-sign Matthews to a significantly cheaper deal next summer, but given the state of free agency, he may be looking for a deal the Mavericks would be smart to avoid, paving the way for a trade that would net at least some assets instead of losing him for nothing.
