2. Aaron Gordon, Orlando Magic
After watching guys like Victor Oladipo and Tobias Harris thrive elsewhere (with Mario Hezonja soon to follow?), the Orlando Magic had no choice but to invest in Aaron Gordon‘s development. That came in the form of a four-year, $80 million risk that needs to start paying dividends in 2018-19.
Even in the weakened Eastern Conference, the Magic are unlikely to contend for a playoff spot, but what they really need to see is Gordon take a definitive step toward stardom. The red-hot first few weeks of his 2017-18 season ultimately proved to be fool’s gold, especially in regards to his 3-point touch.
Though he ultimately had a career year, averaging 17.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, there’s no reason AG can’t become a 20 points per game scorer on this team. Touching up his efficiency (.434/.336/.698 splits) certainly wouldn’t hurt, but if he can improve as a jump shooter and defensive force, and the Magic finally have a face of the franchise, this soon-to-be 23-year-old could be a serious MIP contender.
