Charlotte Hornets: 3 players most likely to be traded in 2018-19
By Luke Askew
2. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has the Charlotte Hornets in an interesting situation. He has two years left on his contract and is making $13 million per season. That’s a lot of money for a guy with basically no offensive upside.
However, his defense is elite. So far, that’s been enough to earn him his paychecks.
Kidd-Gilchrist has been a consistent starter for the Hornets since entering the league in 2012. He’s started in 353 of his 357 games played. Now that the Hornets have a guy like Miles Bridges on the wing, I’m not sure they have room — or a need — for MKG.
In a league that’s trending toward 3-and-D wings, MKG is missing the “3” part of that equation completely. He’s a career 19.4 percent 3-point shooter (based off of an incredibly small sample size because he almost never shoots the deep ball) and has really goofy mechanics that don’t indicated he’ll improve anytime soon.
While the mechanics have actually improved over the years, the production really hasn’t.
Maybe there will be a playoff-hopeful team in February that really needs a lockdown defender on their roster or maybe I’m completely wrong and his shot will improve, increasing his overall value. I mean, hey, he’s only 24 years old.
