1. It’s a low-risk, high-reward opportunity

Yes, Bynum’s career was a rollercoaster. Yes, his time with the Lakers didn’t end well (he was included in the Dwight Howard trade). In general, the kid was a mess during his final few NBA seasons, which were plagued by knee injuries.

In general, though, his time in Los Angeles was terrific. Had it not been for immaturity and durability issues, he easily would have made more than just one All-Star game. Just look at his final five seasons with the Lakers — 14.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 57.3 percent from the field.

After waiving Luol Deng, the Lakers have an open roster spot and a need at center. Bynum is looking to make a comeback. There’s already history between the two parties, and Walton even spent a few years playing by his side. Plus, if there’s anyone who can keep him in line, it’s James. All of the pieces (no matter how misshapen) seem to fit like the world’s most peculiar puzzle.

Magic is an opportunist. Another intriguing one has presented itself to him. Can he see it for what it is — a low-risk, high-reward chance to shore up the roster’s weakest position? Or will he let this one pass by, not seeing enough potential benefit to make the call?

Only time will tell what the future may hold for Bynum. A second go-around with the Lakers would do him some good, though.
