3. The Lakers have a need at center

It’s no secret. No matter how you try to build out the Lakers’ hypothetical starting lineup, the center position is a sore thumb. The lack of starting-caliber talent at the 5-spot is going to be a problem for Los Angeles in 2018-19.

Realistically, JaVale McGee can probably hold the job down. However, he’s much better served as a backup, where he can play the role of solid defensive presence and rebounding machine. As for Ivica Zubac, there’s no telling what to expect from him in Year 3. He showed promise as a rookie, but took a big step backward as a sophomore. For now, he can’t be relied upon.

You could argue that LeBron James and Moritz Wagner will see time at center, and you’d have a legit argument. Chances are, though, that this approach is only taken in certain situations. James can be a small-ball 5, and Wagner has the size. However, LeBron would be best utilized elsewhere and the rookie doesn’t have the defensive talent to protect the paint for extended periods of time.

So why not give Bynum an opportunity to fill the void?

During his heyday, Bynum was one of the best in the business. In his All-Star season (2011-12), the big man averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. If the Lakers could get even half of that production from him, it would be a worthwhile investment.

Bynum is essentially a shot in the dark at this point. However, if he can address the Lakers’ need for a starting center, why not see what some time to get his head straight his done for him?
