2. Continue to enhance relationship with Kelly Olynyk

Among all Heat two-man lineups that played at least 900 minutes together over the course of last season, the Johnson-Kelly Olynyk duo was the most productive with a +7.4 net rating.

Considering Johnson’s propensity to play in an up-tempo manner, and Olynyk’s ability to play on the perimeter as a stretch-big, it’s understandable that this pairing would produce such impressive results.

To illustrate their success, here’s the difference in Johnson’s output with Olynyk and the Heat’s starting center, Hassan Whiteside:

Johnson with Whiteside:

  • On court: 41.8 FG%, 32.0 3P%, 99.4 offensive rating
  • Off court: 44.3 FG%, 38.9 3P%, 108.3 offensive rating

Johnson with Olynyk:

  • On court: 45.8 FG%, 40.3 3P%, 110.5 offensive rating
  • Off court: 41.7 FG%, 34.1 3P%, 100.8 offensive rating

With virtually the same cast returning this season, Johnson will revert to the sixth man role he filled with such aplomb throughout the entire 2016-17 season. Therefore, this should create some additional minutes each game to share with Olynyk on the floor.

After a season of acclimating to each other’s games, the Heat and Johnson will naturally be looking for this duo to take their partnership to another level in 2018-19.
