Kevin Durant, SF, Golden State Warriors

Even before the beginning of 2018 free agency, there was relentless speculation that the Lakers could lure Kevin Durant away from the Warriors. That obviously didn’t happen, even after Durant and James allegedly had a discussion about joining forces (via ESPN‘s Stephen A. Smith).

That, however, doesn’t mean it won’t happen when next July rolls around.

Especially if Durant wins another ring with the Warriors this season (very likely), he could decide to bring an end to his time in the Bay Area. If that’s the case, what would keep him from taking a trip down the I-5 to Los Angeles to join James and the Lakers?

You better believe Magic would welcome him with open arms. The Lakers are projected to have the cap space to sign him to a max contract. He and James are obviously friends, so there’s that piece of the puzzle that must be considered. It may make sense for Durant to find another place to call home, especially with the Warriors’ scary luxury tax situation.

Well, the Lakers just so happen to be a team on the rise. If Durant is interested to teaming up with the one of the other best players in the world, inking a deal with Los Angeles should give him yet another opportunity to play for a ring.

It seems crazy, but so did the idea of LeBron joining the Lakers. Look where we are now. If Durant decides he’s accomplished everything he can with Golden State, maybe he decides to call Staples Center home for a season or two.
