Washington Wizards: Best candidates for 2018-19 NBA awards
By Matt H
Rookie of the Year: Troy Brown Jr.
Let’s start the awards projections with the least likely.
Troy Brown was drafted just outside the lottery at No. 15 overall as a projected wing defender with solid passing ability. He currently can’t make 3-pointers at the NBA level, given his 29.1 percent shooting in college at the University of Oregon.
At the time of the pick, Brown was immediately seen as a project player who would be neatly tucked away on the Wizards’ depth chart at the small forward position as the third-best “junior” at his own position behind Otto Porter Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr.
Also not helping his cause, the number of NBA rookies outside of the lottery who have won the award.
In the last 30 years, only two players have won Rookie of the Year outside of the lottery: Mark Jackson during the 1987-88 season and Malcolm Brogdon in 2016-17. However, each of these players saw significant minutes on the court, at least over 25 a game, whichBrown will not see given his ineffective shooting and depth chart status..
Odds: Not going to happen
