Adding Dante Cunningham

The Spurs added veteran Dante Cunningham, signing him to a one-year deal. Cunningham is an NBA journeyman, having played for six different teams over the course of his 13-year career. The combo forward is another player who will not move the needle much in terms of skill, but he should be able to provide some meaningful minutes off the bench.

Last season with the Brooklyn Nets, Cunningham averaged 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 20.3 minutes per game. He does a little bit of everything, with an emphasis on the word “little.” Cunningham will look to carve out a more meaningful role with his new team this coming season.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich knows a thing or two about coaching and improving players, and he should be able to get the most out of a player like Cunningham. Many players who have performed very well on the Spurs have gone on to be mediocre on other teams. The reverse is also true — sometimes all a player needs to reach the next level is to end up in San Antonio.

Grade: B-
