San Antonio Spurs: Complete 2018 offseason grades
Re-signing Rudy Gay
The San Antonio Spurs made several moves this offseason that helped shore up and consolidate talent. One such more was re-signing forward Rudy Gay to a one-year, $10 million contract. While it’s true that Gay is entering the twilight of his career and is not the scorer he used to be, he performed well for the Spurs last season and should be a reliable option again this coming season.
What Gay brings to the table is size and scoring ability. He’s not the best floor-spacer on the offensive end, but knock down timely shots, serve as a small-ball 4 and he is also a good defensive player. Additionally, his veteran presence will be good for the young guys on the team.
Last season, Gay averaged 11.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists while playing 21.6 minutes off the bench. He mostly played the power forward position, and did end up starting six games as well. He should be able to perform a similar role this upcoming season, and if he can do so he will be well worth the price of his contract.
