30. Elie Okobo, Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns had a pretty good offseason this summer, but the one position they’ve failed to address for 2018-19 was point guard — so far, at least. It appeared the incumbent Brandon Knight, who missed all of last season with an ACL tear, was going to have to step up as the team’s default option at the 1 … until he was promptly dealt to the Rockets.

In a deal sending Knight and Marquese Chriss to Houston, the Suns received rookie combo guard De’Anthony Melton, along with Ryan Anderson. Melton was terrific in NBA Summer League, averaging 16.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. However, this trade does not make Melton the presumptive starter, even if on paper, his two-way potential fits like a dream alongside Devin Booker for the long-term.

After all, the Suns could’ve drafted Melton at No. 31 when they were on the board, but went with Elie Okobo, so until another (likely) move materializes, he gets the nod. Okobo also has long-term potential as a dynamic scoring guard and underrated playmaker, but the soon-to-be 21-year-old would likely struggle as a rookie floor general in a league of grown men. The Suns set themselves up well at point guard for the future, but until a starting-caliber 1 is brought in, this season will be a struggle for two second round rookies duking it out.
