Atlanta Hawks: 3 big questions heading into 2018-19 NBA season
2. How will the first round rookies look?
The hopes of the Hawks’ future rests solely on the collective shoulders of first round picks Trae Young and Kevin Huerter (along with whoever they draft in the lottery next year). While neither player will likely turn the Hawks into an instant contender this year, their performances this year could give the team an idea as to whether or not these are the guys to build around for the next few seasons.
Because Atlanta traded the rights to supposed sure thing Luka Doncic to acquire Young, the former Oklahoma standout will face a tremendous amount of pressure this year to produce, fair or unfair. The same goes for Huerter; while the heat won’t be as intense for him, fans will look to see if he can do more than shoot the 3-ball well.
The good news for both rookies is that they aren’t projected to start right away, but if Atlanta trades away a few veterans, can they step in and show some All-Star potential? The Hawks certainly hope so.
