Houston Rockets: Complete 2018 offseason grades
Drafting Vincent Edwards
Just moments after landing De’Anthony Melton in the second round, Houston decided it was not done making moves, as the team that finished last season with the best record in basketball decided to to add yet another piece to their roster.
During the latter portion of draft night, Morey made a trade to acquire the 52nd overall pick by sending cash to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Vincent Edwards.
Edwards played four years at Purdue, where he emerged as a valuable floor spacer and versatile playmaker in Matt Painter’s motion-heavy offense.
Edwards — who became the first player in program history to finish his career with over 1,500 career points, 700 rebounds and 400 assists — averaged a career-high 14.6 points per game and shot 39.8 percent from 3-point range in his senior year en route to earning second-team All-Big 10 honors and leading the Boilermakers to their second straight Sweet 16 last season.
Although it remains to be seen whether or not his defense and shooting mechanics will translate to the next level, the 22-year-old wing showed signs he could be a solid role player when called upon at Summer League.
His ability to run the floor, cut and hit spot-up jumpers makes him an ideal fit in Mike D’Antoni‘s offense should he be able to find playing time with the Rockets.
The 6’8″, 225-product will more than likely end up being a commuter between the G League and big club due to Houston’s veteran-laden roster.
Yet should injuries arise, Edwards could very well get his chance to make an impact sooner than expected, as his play during the preseason will likely determine his official fate in his rookie campaign.
