Signing Rob Gray

In spite of not hearing his name called during the 2018 NBA Draft, Rob Gray put together one of the most impressive seasons in college basketball last year.

The University of Houston standout played a significant part in helping guide the program back to national prominence under head coach Kelvin Sampson.

The 24-year-old point guard —who rose from the junior college ranks prior to solidifying himself as one of the country’s top scorers — averaged 19.3 points and 4.4 assists per game in his senior season for the Cougars.

Houston went on to its first NCAA Tournament win since 1984, as Gray finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference.

Now, the man who was named as one of 10 finalists for the Jerry West Award seeks to find the same success with the city’s NBA franchise, as Gray recently agreed to terms on a training camp contract with the Rockets this month.

Although it is highly likely that Gray will serve as a camp body, the 6’1″, 185-pound standout could play his way into earning a possible two-way contract pending upon how he performs during the early duration of the preseason.

Despite playing in just 20 minutes of Summer League action for Clutch City due to injury, as the floor general who did not get a chance to show his full body of talents his first go round, could likely make for an interesting player to watch should he go on one of his usual scoring explosions.
