San Antonio Spurs: 3 players most likely to be traded in 2018-19
2. Bryn Forbes
Remember that loaded backcourt I discussed earlier? It also applies to the shooting guard position.
In fact, the 2-guard spot may be the biggest logjam within the Spurs’ roster at this moment. After dealing Leonard for DeMar DeRozan, the former Toronto Raptors superstar takes over as the top shooting guard. Behind him, San Antonio also boasts the talents of Bryn Forbes and Lonnie Walker IV.
We also mustn’t forget that Manu Ginobili still hasn’t decided what the future holds for him. If he opts to return for one more year, that’ll leave the Spurs with four shooting guards worth feeding minutes to. Again, it’s a situation of having too many mouths to feed.
So who goes in that scenario? Obviously DeRozan is staying as the new star of the show in San Antonio. The Spurs just drafted Walker, so I don’t see them letting him go this early. Ginobili doesn’t offer any real trade value, and I don’t think Gregg Popovich would do him like that anyway. That leaves Forbes as the odd man out in this semi-hypothetical situation.
The Spurs could simply hold on to all four (or three), especially with the lack of bodies in the frontcourt. If a trade does materialize, though, I could see Forbes’ cheap contract and impressive shooting skills adding enough value to make him a worthwhile throw-in.
