3. Patty Mills

Right now, the Spurs have too much talent in the backcourt. It all starts at point guard, where the depth chart currently consists of some combination of Dejounte Murray, Patty Mills and Derrick White. Even with Tony Parker gone, there are too many mouths to feed.

Murray should assume the starting role in 2018-19 after taking over as the lead point guard midway through the 2017-18 campaign. Although he still has work to do on the offensive end of his game, his selection to the 2017-18 All-Defensive Team provides evidence to his potential as a difference-making point guard.

Mills would make sense as the leader of the second unit. He’s a seasoned veteran with impressive playmaking abilities and his own brand of feisty defense. Unfortunately, he’s burdened with an overpriced contract and has a young, rising prospect nipping at his heels.

That would be White, who showed well during the Summer League before being derailed by a hamstring injury. The 2017 first round pick has flashed significant upside since landing in San Antonio, and appears on the verge of a breakout. If he continues shining when the regular season arrives, White could make Mills expendable.

It’ll be difficult to find a trade partner for Mills and the three years and $39 million left on his contract. That’s why he finds himself here at No. 3. However, if the right offer comes across R.C. Buford’s desk, don’t be surprised if the Spurs pull the trigger to open up some cap space and minutes for White.
