The Mike Muscala trade

The Philadelphia 76ers lost forward Ersan Ilyasova and Marco Belinelli in free agency, but they helped make up for with the acquisition of stretch-4 Mike Muscala. Muscala was part of a three-team trade that sent Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot along with Dennis Schroder to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Justin Anderson and Carmelo Anthony to the Atlanta Hawks.

After five seasons with the Hawks, Muscala joins just the second team of his NBA career. He averaged 7.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists while shooting 37.1 percent from 3-point land last season. The 6’11” big man has an opportunity to provide solid 3-point shooting off the bench in place of Ilyasova and Belinelli, but he’ll also need to defend at a high level.

Small-ball rotations are aplenty in the East, so Muscala will find himself in many situations where he’s guarding a player smaller than him. He’ll be useful in certain in-game situations for Philadelphia, that’s for sure. On the flip side, Philadelphia unloads two guards in a crowded backcourt to give itself room to breathe.
