Amir Johnson re-signs
J.J. Redick wasn’t the only veteran to return to the Philadelphia Sixers on a one-year deal. Reserve big man Amir Johnson signed a one-year deal to remain in Philadelphia as well. While his contract isn’t as lucrative as Redick’s, the deal gives him another role, at least for another season. Johnson will probably act as Philadelphia’s backup center after trading away Richaun Holmes to Phoenix.
Johnson averaged 4.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest through 74 appearances last season. As he approaches the 14th season in the NBA, he’s found his niche as a veteran presence on a Sixers’ roster full of youth and potential.
He won’t put up big minutes or huge numbers, but he’s a solid insurance policy to have as the team continues to develop big men Jonah Bolden and recent free agent signee Norvel Pelle. With Wilson Chandler in the mix now, it gives Johnson the opportunity to focus solely on playing the center position.
