Golden State Warriors: 3 goals for DeMarcus Cousins in 2018-19
2. Prove he’s still got it
Prior to his injury, Cousins was easily one of the best offensive big men in the game. With a well-rounded shooting arsenal, powerful presence in the paint and improving defensive skill-set, he had no trouble making a major impact for the Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans.
Will he still be that same dominant player after months of rehab?
Only time will tell. But if Cousins wants to score that big contract next offseason, he’s going to need to prove he’s still got it. The Warriors will have no problem with easing him back into the swing of things. When he finally gets completely ramped up, though, he needs to show that he can pick up where he left off as an elite offensive force.
I’m sure he’d agree it’s a rather big focus for him. On top of being the explosive force down low, Cousins is going to want to live up to the “third Splash Brother” moniker that’s been floating around the Twitterverse. We need to see more monster outings and All-Star caliber play. Otherwise, clubs may start to feel their concerns are confirmed that he’ll never be the same player.
If that happens, Cousins will see his value in the NBA begin to descend. That obviously wouldn’t be ideal for his long-term financial security, but it’s the price of suffering a serious injury as a plus-sized professional athlete.
For his sake, let’s hope Cousins can prove this injury wasn’t a death sentence for his status as an elite NBA center.
