The Richaun Holmes trade

In a vacuum, trading a fan favorite and useful veteran like Jared Dudley, plus a future second-rounder, for a nonstarter like Darrell Arthur would be a major loss. However, considering who it made space for Phoenix to immediately trade for, the moves were both minor wins for McDonough.

After moving Dudley, the Suns turned right back around and got reserve big man Richaun Holmes from the Philadelphia 76ers. Even better, they got him for only cash considerations, since the Sixers were trying to cut their overstocked roster down to 15.

As he approaches his 25th birthday, Holmes is no star waiting to happen. However, he was a very productive big in limited minutes during his first three years in the league, averaging 7.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in just 16.9 minutes per game off the bench.

With the glut of centers Philly had, Holmes never got an extended look as a small-ball 5, but his athleticism and shot-blocking are off the charts, as is his effort. Whether he’s plugged in as a 4 or a 5, he’s a hardworking big who will get his fair chance to impress Kokoskov and potentially earn more playing time on a rebuilding team.
