The San Antonio Spurs may or may not use a roster spot on guard Manu Ginobili this upcoming year. How much is the leadership he provides actually worth?
Despite being under contract for the 2018-19 season for the San Antonio Spurs, Manu Ginobili is contemplating retirement. There’s been minimal news on the Ginobili front, but the few indications out there point to him being more likely to return than not.
The question is, should the Spurs want him to come back?
It must be noted that Manu Ginobili has been a critical member of the San Antonio Spurs for the past two decades, and those contributions can’t be overlooked. If he wants to come back and play another year, he’s more than earned that right.
With the departures of Tony Parker via free agency, and Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green via trade, the 41-year-old Ginobili is now the last key member of the Spurs’ 2014 championship team still on the roster. Emotionally, a true San Antonian will surely not want to see him go as well.
Objectively though, the matter of keeping Ginobili is not so black-and-white for the Spurs (minor pun intended). As with anything, there are pros and cons.
