Trading for Dakari Johnson

Much like the Temple deal, the trade that sent Jarell Martin and cash considerations to the Orlando Magic for Dakari Johnson and the rights to Tyler Harvey served as multiple moves within one.

Not only did moving Martin open up some extra playing time at the 4 for those still slated to wear a Grizzlies uniform in 2018-19, it also helped Memphis move below the luxury tax threshold.

According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, “the Grizzlies will save on salary and luxury tax with the deal, dropping them $473,000 below the luxury tax.”

Ducking below the tax whenever possible is always a goal for any NBA franchise, especially those who might be in the running for a playoff spot but aren’t serious title contenders.

As for Johnson, he’s a 22-year-old big man who hasn’t gotten much of an opportunity to play in the league since being drafted with the No. 48 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Johnson finally made his debut this past season, appearing in 31 games and averaging 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds in just 5.2 minutes per game.

With no true backup center on the roster following the trade of Davis to the Kings, Johnson might be in line for some playing time this upcoming season where he will likely be relied upon to protect the rim and grab rebounds.

Joshua Riddell had this to say about Johnson prior to the 2015 draft:

"“With his size, strength and finishing ability at the rim, Johnson has the potential to fill a role with NBA teams. In limited minutes off the bench, Johnson will have to play hard and with high energy, something he’s done somewhat inconsistently at times, which would endear him to his NBA coach. If he can overcome his relative lack of athleticism, he can be a useful NBA player with his physical tools and reasonable skill set.”"

It’s no secret Johnson is an unspectacular option, but the Grizzlies don’t have anyone else to back up Gasol at this point, which, to be frank, is a bit scary. It will be interesting to see if the coaching staff can squeeze anything resembling positive production out of Johnson this year.
