Bringing Zaza Pachulia aboard

After spending the last two seasons winning NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors, Zaza Pachulia has signed with the Pistons on a one-year, $2.4 million contract. At 6’11” with 15 years of NBA experience, he will be a viable backup to starting center Andre Drummond.

Pachulia has never been an offensive threat, averaging only 6.9 points per game throughout his career. However, he provides physical toughness, which the Pistons lack with finesse players Blake Griffin and Drummond. He has the reputation of being one of the dirtiest players in the league, and finished in the top 15 in flagrant fouls from 2011-17.

Additionally, Pachulia brings championship pedigree to the Pistons’ locker room. He’s the only player on the roster that has won an NBA title. He was the starter in 15 playoff games for the Warriors in 2017, and can use his experience to mentor guys like Drummond and Jon Leuer.

Although there were some fans in Detroit that were upset with this acquisition, Pachulia should be a valuable addition to the roster. With limited cap flexibility, it was important for management to find experienced players at a bargain price. He is an upgrade from previous Drummond backup Eric Moreland, and can give the Pistons 15-20 quality minutes per game.
