Detroit Pistons: Complete 2018 offseason grades

Adding Jose Calderon
Ten years ago, Jose Calderon was one of the premier point guards in the NBA. With the Toronto Raptors in 2008-09, he averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 assists per game, and set an NBA record by making 98 percent of his free throws. During his first stint in Detroit as the starting point guard in 2012-13, he made a staggering 52 percent of his 3-pointers.
Calderon has decided to rejoin the Pistons, signing a one-year, $2.4 million contract. Entering the upcoming season at 37 years old, Father Time has caught up with the aging guard. Since leaving the Pistons in the summer of 2013, he’s played for five different franchises, averaging a meager 6.6 points and 3.3 assists per game.
With Reggie Bullock and Ish Smith being the only two point guards on the roster, it’s understandable why management felt the need to sign Calderon. He’s still an efficient 3-point shooter, and has the ability to create open shots for his teammates.
However, there were other options at the Pistons’ disposal. Instead of signing an aging point guard in the final years of his career, Detroit could’ve went after someone like Shabazz Napier. Only 27 years old, Napier is coming off the best season of his career with 8.7 points per game. His price tag is almost equal with Calderon’s, and his ceiling much higher.
Grade: D+
