Trading for Khyri Thomas

As mentioned earlier, Detroit entered the 2018 NBA Draft with only one second round pick. Unable to make big moves during free agency, the Pistons had to get creative to add depth to the roster. On draft night, they sent two future second round picks to the Philadelphia 76ers in order to acquire the 38th overall pick, Khyri Thomas.

A 6’4″ shooting guard with a 6’10” wingspan, Thomas is a defensive specialist. He terrorized the Big East throughout his time at Creighton, winning two consecutive Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards. With the length he possesses, he has the ability to defend almost every position on the floor.

Thomas is also a threat on the offensive end of the court. Last season at Creighton, he averaged a career high in points with 15.1 per game, along with 4.4 rebounds. He shot 51.1 percent from the field in his college career, and was a respectable 40.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Thomas was impressive on both sides of the ball during NBA Summer League, and was viewed as the Pistons’ most consistent player. Detroit is in win-now mode, and parting with two future second round picks to acquire Thomas was a no-brainer. A bargain at No. 38 overall, it’s possible that he will be viewed as the steal of the 2018 NBA Draft.
