1. Become somewhat of a 3-point threat

The major story with Drummond this offseason has been his “improved” 3-point shooting ability. More and more, players are improving their ability to stretch the floor. Last season, Drummond shot just 14.9 percent outside of three feet.

The Pistons don’t need Drummond to start going shot-for-shot with Luke Kennard outside. However, if he doesn’t become at least somewhat consistent from 3-point range, this could be almost a wasted offseason for him.

The offseason is a time for players to develop new abilities to their game. LeBron James is one of the most notorious for his offseason improvements. Drummond used the last offseason for his free throw shooting. Centers that can consistently stretch the floor are extremely rare. If Drummond could jump to the same level as someone like Marc Gasol, although ambitious, that would be excellent.

Having a floor-stretching big gives your team so many more offensive lineup combinations and abilities. If the Pistons could confidently trot out a lineup where Drummond represents one of the shooting threats, it would force opposing teams to play out of their comfort zones. It’s rare for centers to feel comfortable defending that far from the rim. If Drummond can force that issue on opponents, Casey will gladly use his offensive creativity to create mismatches for this team.
