Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 goals for Collin Sexton’s rookie season
3. Play consistent defense
Collin Sexton made headlines for his sumo-wrestler defensive stance in a Summer League playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers‘ Josh Hart. Intimidating methods aside, Sexton still has a long ways to go to improve.
With his speed, he should be able to stick with explosive guards like Russell Westbrook and Donovan Mitchell. However, he’ll need to get stronger in order to keep up with this kind of competition at the next level.
In 2017-18, Cleveland ranked second-to-last in defensive rating (109.5). With no elite defenders available, head coach Tyronn Lue has his work cut out for him fixing how the Cavs operate on the defensive end.
Although defense is one of his biggest strengths as a prospect, Sexton will have to adjust at the NBA level. The Cavaliers need to make a lot of changes to improve on that side of the ball, and Sexton setting the example will be key.
