Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 goals for Collin Sexton’s rookie season
5. Let others shine/pick your spots
LeBron James is such an absurdly talented player, that he must dominate the ball to give his team a chance at victory. Throughout the playoffs, he averaged 41.9 minutes per game and has a 35.2 usage percentage.
Although the King’s supporting cast has been heavily criticized, they aren’t as sorry as the critics make them out to be. Yes, LeBron’s ability to penetrate the paint and draw attention allows for teammates get open for easy baskets. But players that require the ball to build their rhythm aren’t always comfortable being forced into spot-up shooter roles, and struggle playing off-ball.
George Hill averaged 16.9 points and 4.2 assists per game on 40.3 percent 3-point shooting in 2016-17. Jordan Clarkson and Rodney Hood were both 14-16 point per game scorers as well. All of these players saw a significant dip in their usage rate and failed to adapt in the short time following the trades that sent them to Cleveland.
With all this in mind, Collin Sexton, will have to take a different approach if the Cavs are to be a winning team. He should give space for veterans like Kevin Love and Hill to create, while making a concerted effort to get touches for Kyle Korver, Tristan Thompson and Larry Nance Jr.
