Signing Shabazz Napier
The point guard spot is the most critical position on the court. Much like the quarterback position in the NFL, having capable point guards and depth at the position could be the difference between being a playoff contender or a lottery team.
After trading Jeremy Lin and Isaiah Whitehead in the Kenneth Faried deal, Marks needed to move swiftly to shore up the bench. He signed Shabazz Napier to a two-year, $3.8 million contract.
Napier is coming off the best season of his career. Last season in Portland, he had career highs with 8.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. He also improved playing off the ball, recording career bests with 42 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from beyond the arc. Marks noticed his breakout year, and heaped praise on his new point guard.
"“He’s coming off a really good year,” said Marks at HSS Training Center on Tuesday. “Played extremely well. You can see what happened in the past where having depth at that position is something that we need. At any time where you’re able to add talent and add talent through depth as well, that’s something that will help us long-term.”"
Drafted in 2014, Napier will be playing for his fourth team in four years. If he can replicate last year’s success serving as a backup to D’Angelo Russell, he may have found a consistent home in Brooklyn.
